Proper Job wins Champion Bottled Beer of Britain 2025

St Austell Brewery has announced that its iconic Proper Job IPA has been awarded Champion Bottled Beer of Britain at this year’s CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) competition, revealed at the Great British Beer Festival. This long-standing CAMRA award is one of the most respected accolades in the beer world, highlighting the winner not only across the UK but also on the international stage.

The competition is known for its independence and rigorous judging process, which spans two years. It begins with nominations from CAMRA members and volunteer tasting panels, followed by regional heats, culminating in a final round. Every stage is judged through strict blind tastings to ensure complete impartiality.

This marks the second time Proper Job has claimed the top honour – a proud achievement for the brewery – adding to a history of recognition in the same category, with silver awards in 2019, 2018, and 2014.

St Austell Brewery’s Brewing Director, Georgina Young, commented:

“We are very honoured and delighted to be recognised in this category with our amazing Proper Job IPA, which was first brewed in 2006, created using original new style hops made with Chinook and Cascade.
The bottled version of Proper Job claimed the overall champion beer of Britain back in 2011, so it is wonderful for it to be recognised again in a more crowded market. This award is a testament to our commitment to this beer’s original recipe and our drive to improve quality through technical innovation.”

Judges praised Proper Job as: “The forerunner of many New World IPAs. A gorgeous looking gold coloured IPA with a strong fruity nose and a perfect balance of biscuit, citrus fruits and bitter hops. With an ABV of 5.5%, this is a beer to savour and enjoy.”

St Austell Brewery also extended congratulations to Penzance Brewing Co, whose Mild was named Champion Beer of Britain this year, recognising their incredible achievement with a truly outstanding beer.
